- Claims Attorney
Description
We’re seeking a Claims Attorney to join our Claims department. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Claims, this role is part of a collaborative team that includes fellow attorneys, Medical Legal Assistants, and Medical Information Consultants. This is a full-time, hybrid position based at our Brentwood corporate office, with working hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
General Functions
Responsible for supervision and evaluation of assigned medical malpractice and related claims, including establishing and maintaining reserves sufficient to cover potential claim exposure.
Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

In partnership with department mentors, responsibilities include:
- Review and become familiar with SVMIC medical professional liability insurance policy and pertinent case law and statutes applicable to medical professional liability claims.
- Review selected claim files for training and building knowledge and skills.
- Communicate and collaborate with others in the Company to learn SVMIC’s culture, values and vision along with technical aspects of the position.
- Communicate with policyholders and others related to claim and risk management concerns or medical legal inquiries during SVMIC business hours and as business needs require.
- Initially manage minimal but gradually increasing number of files.
- Learn and implement techniques for successful claims handling and documentation.
- Actively seek input from department mentors.
- Establish, investigate, document, reserve, evaluate and resolve professional liability and other claims.
- Prepare select claims for internal review by Claims Management Committee.
- Collaborate with MIS Consultants as needed.
- Communicate and collaborate with retained defense attorneys during the course of investigations, claims and lawsuits.
- Evaluate file management, communications and work product of defense attorneys during the defense of claims and litigation.
- Review and process defense firm and other invoices.
- Prepare for and participate in negotiations, including alternative dispute resolution, such as mediations.
- May prepare, design, and present internal and external presentations for other departments or policyholders.
- May be requested to write articles as needed for risk education publications and participate in presentations for policyholders.
- Explore and potentially obtain certifications or licenses in other jurisdictions if required to manage claims in that jurisdiction.
- Meet or exceed supervisor’s expectations for productivity, quality, continuous improvement, and goal accomplishment.
- Contribute to SVMIC’s success by identifying opportunities and making recommendations that may lead to improved processes.
- Regular and predictable on-site attendance required.
- Ability to work remotely as business needs dictate.
- Available to travel by various means (this includes air travel), as business needs dictate.
- Complete special projects and other duties assigned.

Education
Doctorate Degree (J.D)
Relevant Experience Required
Minimum 2 years of experience in the practice of law.
Licenses and Professional Designation Required
· Valid License to practice in the state of Tennessee
· Valid Driver’s License
· May be required to obtain certification or license in other jurisdictions if required to manage claims in that jurisdiction
