CPH Insurance is seeking an experienced attorney to join our Avoiding Liability Helpline, a risk-management resource available to our insured mental health professionals nationwide.
This is a unique opportunity for an attorney with experience in mental health professional liability to provide practical, preventive guidance to therapists and other mental health professionals regarding common legal and ethical concerns that arise in everyday practice.
Requirements
The Role
CPH's Avoiding Liability Helpline gives insured mental health professionals access to an attorney when they have a legal, ethical, or risk-management question about their practice and want guidance on how to handle it appropriately and reduce the likelihood of a future claim. Insureds receive 2 hours of helpline access per policy term.
These are telephone consultations only and are preventive in nature. Helpline attorneys do not represent insureds in lawsuits, licensing board investigations, or other formal claims or proceedings.
Most calls involve issues that will be familiar to an attorney with experience in mental health professional liability, including:
Confidentiality and privacy concerns
Requests for patient records and release of information
Dual relationships and professional boundaries
Suicide and self-harm risk
Termination of the therapeutic relationship
Difficult or threatening clients
Documentation and recordkeeping concerns
Minor consent, parental access, and custody-related questions
Mandated reporting
Other common ethical and risk-management questions arising in mental health practice
The goal of the Helpline is straightforward: help insureds handle everyday practice concerns appropriately before they develop into claims.
Schedule & Volume
We are looking for an attorney who can maintain substantial availability Monday through Friday during normal business hours, approximately 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
This is a high-volume Helpline, with appointments available in 30-minute increments throughout the business day. Most consultations take approximately 10–30 minutes.
We are looking for someone who can make the Helpline a significant part of their professional schedule and accommodate a consistent volume of consultations throughout the day.
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is a senior attorney with meaningful experience in professional liability involving mental health professionals, such as psychologists, clinical social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, and other behavioral health providers.
Because CPH serves insureds nationwide, we are particularly interested in attorneys who are licensed in multiple states and able to provide consultations across a broad geographic area. Candidates able to cover many—or potentially all—of the states in which CPH operates are strongly preferred.
This role requires someone who is comfortable working independently, communicating clearly by telephone, and providing practical guidance efficiently. For an attorney familiar with this area of practice, the majority of Helpline questions involve recognizable issues encountered regularly in mental health professional liability and risk management.
Why This Role Is Different
This is preventive consulting, not claims defense or litigation.
There are no court appearances, depositions, discovery schedules, or ongoing litigation files associated with the Helpline. Consultations are generally brief, focused, and completed by telephone.
For an experienced professional liability attorney who is looking for an alternative to traditional litigation or claims work, the CPH Avoiding Liability Helpline offers the opportunity to continue using that experience in a flexible, focused setting.
